Mistrial for John Edwards

A relieved former Senator John Edwards addressed the press yesterday but took no questions after he was found “Not Guilty” on one of six charges against him. The judge declared a mistrial for the remaining charges after nine days of jury deliberation.

The disgraced 2008 presidential candidate was accused of accepting illegal campaign contributions. Edwards’ defense argued that nearly $750,000 from his contributor Rachel “Bunny” Mellon were intended to support his pregnant mistress Rielle Hunter and hide his second family from his wife Elizabeth Edwards who lost her battle to breast cancer in 2010. Source

No ♥ For NYC

What’s this? New York Governor Cuomo doesn’t love NYC  anymore? Well not this summer anyway. Our iconic heart is on hiatus from the “I New York” slogan for seven weeks as part of a $5 million tourism campaign unveiled this week.

The original design was created by Milton Glaser in 1977. New Yorkers and visitors were encouraged to go online and replace his image with a sketch of their favorite NYC activity. In its place this summer you can expect to see: a slice of pizza or a beach ball or even a hot air balloon. Ho-hum. Source

Mayor Bloomberg’s Ban on Oversize Soft Drinks

NYC Mayor Bloomberg wants to ban the sale of all sugary soft drinks larger than 16 ounces. His proposed anti-obesity initiative requires the approval of the Board of Health whose members were appointed by Bloomberg.

The measure is criticized for being inconsistent. For example: It would not apply to 7-Eleven, the home of the Super Big Gulp nor would it halt the sale of extra large fatty milk shakes. Newly married City Council Speaker Christine Quinn is a critic of the plan. She’s the 2013 mayoral race front-runner. Source
